Welcome to Living Democracy: Engaging Citizens, a curriculum designed to revitalize Civic Education in classrooms. Based on the Ohio Content Standards for Social Studies, our flexible units adapt to your teaching needs and specific student requirements.
Curriculum for Social Studies, Grades 1-12
This curriculum was designed to help teachers put Civic Education back into the classrooms with lessons based on the Ohio Content Standards for Social Studies. Each unit is designed to be flexible and adaptable to teacher needs and to specific students. Teachers may choose to do all or any part of any lesson. If a teacher chooses to go through in order and do all the exercises, it may take from 5-10 days depending on how much time in each period, in each day they would spend on a lesson.
Teachers have permission to copy for each student all the handouts. If a teacher chooses to purchase a class set of books, the information for ordering is below. There is one class room set per grade level that may be checked out of the Washington County Public Library (Ohio).
All lessons are aligned with Ohio State Learning Standards in Social Studies and Language Arts- Government Strand. There are materials provided to differentiate for students who are developmentally delayed, struggling to read and for students who are talented. Teachers may also make individual adjustments for students with special needs on IEP’s or 504’s.
